Lyme Disease: A fast-spreading
threat.
- Lyme disease is a tick-borne bacterial
disease that can cause arthritis, kidney damage and death in both people and
dogs.
- Since its discovery in Lyme,
Connecticut, in 1975, Lyme disease has spread rapidly throughout the U.S.
Today, canine Lyme is in every state.
- The number of human Lyme disease cases
has nearly tripled since 1990.
Is your dog at risk?
- Has Lyme disease been found in your
area, in either people or dogs?
- Do you live in an area near woods or
tall brush?
- Do you bring your dog along while
walking, hiking, camping, picnicking, hunting or fishing?
- Have you ever found a tick on your dog
or on any other pet or person in your household?
If you answered yes to one or more questions,
your dog is at risk for Lyme disease. Take steps now to protect your pet.
Brush your dog after each outing, and use insect repellents as recommended by
your veterinarian. Do daily "tick checks" whenever the temperature rises
above 40 degrees, and use tweezers to remove any ticks you find. Most
importantly, ask your veterinarian about annual vaccination for Lyme disease.
