The Groton City Animal Hospital has a long history of providing comprehensive, compassionate care for horses.  The practice prides itself on the depth of education that we try to provide to our clients. Communication with our clients about their horse’s health is very important to us.  The base of our practice is wellness care with an emphasis on educating our clients and preventing health problems.  We strive to spend the extra time with each of our clients that will help them better understand how to keep their equine companions healthy.  Current practice focus includes:

Routine ambulatory wellness care (vaccinations, blood testing, physical exams, etc)

Routine blood and fecal screening which can be easily and efficiently performed right in our lab at the Groton City Animal Hospital in many cases

Field surgeries including castration, hernia repair

Ambulatory emergency services to treat medical colic, lacerations and other minor emergencies

Reproductive services including breeding mares with fresh chilled and frozen semen

Ultrasound capabilities for reproductive evaluations and lameness work-ups

Portable x-ray machine for field radiography

Dental care including routine floating, molar extractions, evaluation and adjustment of bite abnormalities

Care of geriatric patients including screening for diseases such as Cushings, dental care and diet evaluations and adjustments as needed to maintain our geriatric patients in good health in their senior years.

Dr. Baxendell has a particular interest in working with "metabolic" horses (overweight, cresty neck, easy keeper type horses) in addressing dietary concerns to achieve an appropriate body condition as well a routine monitoring of horses experiencing problems such as laminitis.

When end of life decisions are to be made for our equine companions, we can help guide you through this difficult process including making these tough decisions, on-farm euthanasia procedures and disposal options.  We are animal owners ourselves and we strive to treat all our clients with  care and compassion at this most difficult time.

Our practice is also always looking for new and innovative techniques and tools to expand the scope of our practice and provide an even higher degree of care to our patients and clients. We are committed to seeking out continuing education opportunities to help expand our doctor’s knowledge base. This can be a simple as reading periodicals and pursing new textbooks or as in-depth as attending national equine conferences.  If there is a product or service that our practice does not currently offer, please let us know so we can look in to it.
