Caring for pets and their people...
HISTORY:
In 2001 the Groton City
Animal Hospital was opened in the Finger Lakes area of Central New York. This was a culmination of approximately 1 year of
work in establishing a physical plant to support the Gr oton
City Veterinary Practice which had been previously run out of Dr. Baxendell’s
house.
Following graduation, Dr. Baxendell worked at a mixed animal practice in
Syracuse, NY followed by working at a large animal practice in Cortland, NY.
When she joined the practice in Cortland, the practice only cared for cattle.
Over the six years that she was at the practice she built up the equine and
small ruminant side of the practice such that it eventually accounted for 50% of
her practice time.
In 1998, the practice that she was working for merged with
another local practice. At that time, Dr. Baxendell left to form her own
practice. The clients that she had drawn to the practice in Cortland moved with
her to the new Groton City Veterinary Practice. Over the next three years, the
practice showed tremendous growth. During this period, many of the clients
inquired as to whether she was able to provide services to small animals as they
were very pleased with the quality of service she provided to their large
animals. With the original intention of expanding the practice to provide small
animal services as well as creating a location for future expansion of the large
animal services, the Groton City Animal Hospital was created. A three acre
property on Route 222 in Groton was purchased in June of 2000. The property was
formally a dairy farm originally owned by the Bancroft family and more currently
by Tom and Sally Brown. The property consisted of an older farm house, a large
dairy barn, smaller horse barn and large free span equipment shed. To
accommodate the small animal practice, a large (40’ by 40’) addition was made on
to the farm house. The house was remodeled to be part of the clinic including a
treatment room, radiology suite, surgery, food storage and office space. The
addition comprised a reception area, three exam rooms, a lab/pharmacy area,
inventory room and staff break room. We also have
turned the old equipment shed into our large animal facility where three large stalls
are located that are used for large animal hospitalization or a safe place to put
animals that are hauled into Groton City for procedures such as floats, reproductive
procedures, etc. The
facility was completed and opened in January of 2001.
The Groton City Animal
Hospital is currently a four doctor mixed animal practice. There are two small
animal doctors and two large animal doctors.
OUR PRACTICE:
We at Groton City Animal
Hospital understand that your pet is your companion, friend and perhaps even a
member of your family. As such, we are dedicated to providing the highest
quality of preventive, medical and surgical care to your animals and the best
possible service to our clients.
"An ounce of prevention..."
Early detection of health problems can help your
pet lead a healthy, long life.
As such, we recommend annual physical exams
as the foundation of a general wellness program. Additional testing is
recommended for animals that are predisposed to health problems due to species,
breed, age and special circumstances.
